Burlington, MA

Young girl with braces smiling Dental Care of Burlington in Burlington, MAMost people are familiar with the concept of orthodontic braces. However, some people are still unaware of the numerous options available today. Thanks to technological advancements and improved techniques, we here at Dental Care of Burlington specialize in a wide variety of braces and straightening appliances. During your consultation appointment, Dr. Kamand Shaibani will be able to determine which appliance is right for you!

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces generally consist of three major components: brackets, a wire, and elastic bands. Each bracket is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. These brackets are then connected with a thin metal wire that is held in place by the elastic bands. Throughout your treatment, the wire is tightened to move your teeth to a more proper position.

Ceramic Braces

Traditional metal braces can be very indiscreet and even stigmatized. For patients concerned with cosmetics, we may recommend ceramic braces. Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, but the brackets are tooth-colored or even clear. In some cases, we also use a tooth-colored wire to improve aesthetics.

Lingual System Braces

Lingual braces are also similar to traditional metal braces. However, instead of being bonded to the front surfaces, a lingual bracket is placed behind your teeth. This makes lingual braces an excellent alternative for a patient who wants discreet treatment.

Like traditional braces, the lingual system involves tightening the wire to move your teeth to a more proper position. Treatment times can vary from 18 months to three years. The length of your treatment depends on the severity of your orthodontic issues.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligner systems are a relatively new development in orthodontic treatment. The aligners are thin, clear trays that are custom-made using an impression, or mold, of your mouth. The trays put pressure on your teeth until they slowly move to a slightly better position.

Each tray in your series should be worn about 22 hours a day at two-week intervals. By the end of your series, your teeth should be in their proper position, or very close to it. Once your treatment is complete, we will fabricate a retainer, similar to your aligner trays, that prevents your teeth from moving back out of alignment. A retainer is an integral part of protecting your new smile!

Self-ligating Braces (Damon)

The Damon system is an entirely new approach to orthodontic treatment with braces. Traditional braces must be tightened throughout treatment until your teeth are straight. The Damon system uses self-ligating braces with a slide mechanism that tightens the wire naturally as your teeth realign.

Self-ligating braces have some benefits over traditional brackets and wires. For instance, the Damon system is much more aesthetically pleasing than traditional braces. It can also result in reduced treatment time and more effective results. With less pressure on the teeth and less friction, the Damon system is also much more comfortable. Self-ligating braces also result in fewer office visits and shorter appointments.
