What is Trigeminal Neuralgia

Posted on 10/10/2022 by Evan
What is Trigeminal NeuralgiaTrigeminal neuralgia is a chronic condition that can cause sudden, severe pain attacks, usually on one side of the face. These attacks can make it difficult to carry out regular activities. Since surgical procedures often only briefly decrease symptoms, other types of medication can help to lessen these brief, intermittent, severely painful episodes.

Trigeminal neuralgia also referred to as douloureaux, is a facial condition that can make daily activities difficult. Momentary bursts of intense pain can be brought on by routine activities like chewing, talking, smiling, or brushing your teeth. The pain may sporadically return even if these not pleasant episodes are brief. Typically, trigeminal neuralgia only affects one side of your face. Your face will be affected on both sides, though not simultaneously if it is bilateral. Bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is also quite rare. Usually, the right side of the face is more commonly affected than the left.

Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia typically affects older people, and it affects women more frequently than men. Additionally, it occurs on your right face side more frequently than on your left. Trigeminal neuralgia frequently arises on its own, but it can sporadically be triggered by dental procedures. The situation where a blood vessel presses up against the trigeminal nerve is known as vascular compression and may be the reason. An artery pressing on a nerve can gradually wear away the insulation, known as myelin, leaving the nerve bare and very sensitive.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia

The symptoms that follow may resemble those caused by tooth problems. In order to manage the discomfort, people who have not treated trigeminal neuralgia periodically try out different dental procedures. In addition, multiple sclerosis or a tumor may cause trigeminal neuralgia. For more information on your dental health call or visit our clinic today.
