Fillings
The most common way to fix a cavity is through a filling. In the past, fillings were made of precious metals like gold or silver, which indicated someone was wealthy enough to have their cavities filled. However, the adults of today want their fillings to look like the rest of their teeth, which is why the majority of fillings now are made from porcelain or resin. These fillings can be color-matched to the rest of your tooth, and once the filling is complete, it can last for decades if you care for your teeth properly.
Crowns
If your cavity is small, it can be fixed easily with a simple tooth filling that fills in the hole. However, what happens if your cavity is larger and more difficult to fill in properly? If you have a large cavity, and especially if it has reached the center of your tooth, you may need a crown. Crowns are like coverings for your tooth to protect it from any more damage and strengthen your weakened tooth. Like fillings, crowns used to be gold or silver, but today, most people prefer their crowns to be tooth-colored.
Inlays and Onlays
If you get a cavity on the biting surface of one of your molars, and it is large, you may need a special filling that is a cross between a filling and a crown. Both inlays and onlays cover the biting edges of your molars like a crown, but they do not cover your entire tooth. This allows your molar to continue to do its job while eliminating the cavity.
